과학자 코페르니쿠스의 마지막 기도 
"예수여, 당신의 나라에 임하실 때에 나를 생각하소서."(눅23:42) 
 
니콜라스 코페르니쿠스는 1473년 2월 19일 폴란드에서 태어난
유명한 천문학자요, 수학자로서 우주에 대한사람들의 이해가
그의 학문적 연구결과에 의하여 근본적으로 뒤바뀌게 되었다.
그는 동시에 널리 알려진 작가였다.

그러나 그는 당대에 유명한 과학자요 지성인인 동시에
예수그리스도가 자신의 구주임을 확신했던 경건한 신앙인이었다.
그러던 그가 중병으로 인하여 마지막 고통을 당할때

"천체에 대한 설명들"(On Resolutions of the Celestial Bodies) 이라는 책의 인쇄가
끝나 그의 팔에 놓여졌을만큼 뛰어난 과학자였다.
 
그러나 그는 자신의 생명이 끝나 가는 순간까지
한번도 자신을 유명한 과학자요, 천문학자로 생각해 본 적이 없었다.
오히려 구주되시는 예수님으로부터 마땅히 용서 받아야 할 죄인으로 생각했다.

그래서 그는 자신의 묘비에 다음과 같은 비문을 적어 달라고 부탁했다.

"주님, 나는 베드로에게 보여 주셨던 그 사랑을 기대하지 않겠습니다.
또한 사도바울에게 내려 주셨던 그 은혜를 간구하지도 않겠습니다.
다만 주님과 함께 십자가에 달렸던 강도에게 베풀어주신
그 용서만을 간절히 부탁하오니
나에게도 그러한 용서와 자비를 베풀어 주시옵소서."
 

His Last Prayer

"Lord remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom"(Luke 23:42).

Nicholas Copernicus was a famed astronomer born in Poland, Feb. 19, 1473.
He was a mathematician whose accomplishments changed men's ideas of the universe.
Also he was a well-known writer.

Although highly educated in astronomical science
he was much more- he was a child of God who had learned to know
and trust his Savior, Jesus Christ.

When he was critically ill with his final illness,
his book, "On Resolutions of the Celestical Bodies," just off the press,
was laid in his arms.

At the close of his life, he did not think of himself as an astronomer or scientist,
but only as a sinner who needed the forgiveness of his Savior.

He asked that the following epitaph be written on his gravestone.

"Lord. I do not ask the kindness Thou didst show to Peter.
I do not dare to ask the grace Thou didst grant to Paul;
but, Lord, the mercy Thou didst show to the dying robber,
that mercy show to me. That earnestly I pray."
